In 2010, Alvan Yap signed up for a one-year assignment as a volunteer teacher with the Singapore International Foundation (SIF). He was attached to the Agape School for the Deaf in Dili, the capital of Timor Leste, where, besides teaching, he helped to develop a curriculum and a standardised sign language system.
Hearing-impaired himself, Alvan has a diploma in special education and had taught in a school for the deaf in Singapore for four years. He now works as an editor and writer with a publishing company, and continues to volunteer with the SIF on an ad hoc basis.
In January and February 2012, Alvan held an exhibition of photos taken during his overseas stint at The Arts House, Singapore. Here are some of the highlights, which showcase the beauty of Timor-Leste's land and people.
