About the Speaker

Bernard Harrison is the 'zoo man' behind the success of Singapore Zoological Gardens (SZG) and Night Safari. He joined SZG as Curator of Zoology in 1973, and swiftly went onto positions of Assistant Director, Executive Director, Chief Executive of SZG and Night Safari, and finally, Chief Executive Officer of Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS manages SZG, Night Safari and Jurong Bird Park). Under Bernard's leadership, WRS Consultancy was set up to undertake the planning and development of zoo projects in China, India, Indonesia, Cambodia, United Arab Emirates and the Seychelles.

A long standing member of the internationally zoo fraternity, Bernard is a member of the WRS Animal Welfare and Ethics Committee, Executive Board Member and Immediate Past President of the South East Asian Zoos Association (SEAZA), a member of IUCN's Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG), a World Council Board Member of the Inter-national Association of Theme Parks and Attractions (IAAPA), and also a World Board Member of the Inter-national Species Inventory System (ISIS). He was on the Council of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) as its Secretary and Vice President, and today enjoys the position of being an Honorary Member of the Association.

Because of his extensive experience and network of colleagues and his natural skill as a leader, Bernard is able to put together specific concept development and design teams tailored to individual projects. Bernard did his undergraduate studies in animal behaviour and has a master's degree in zoo planning.
