Rani Singam: Passion Beyond Mere Contentment
Acclaimed jazz singer (19 Oct 2015)

About the Speaker

Rani Singam is one of the most sought-after and accomplished contemporary jazz vocalists. A former lawyer, Rani is considered as one of the leading international singers today in a career spanning over 12 years. Rani is named in “The Jazz Singers, The Ultimate Guide”, a Hal Leonard publication which serves as an encyclopedic guide on the important singers in jazz today.

Her debut album “With A Song In My Heart” was produced by legendary maestro Jeremy Monteiro in 2004 and marked a significant milestone in her career.

Rani produced her second album “Contentment” in 2011 which has been lauded by critics as contemporary and innovative. The album is the largest representation of Rani’s work as a producer and lyricist. All About Jazz describes it as a “vibrant authentic recording of vocal jazz – a little bit of gold.”

Rani sings in a style which is truly reminiscent of the great jazz singers she admires. She also has a truly endearing way of connecting with the audience. Her “playful yet caressing vocals likened by many to legendary jazz vocalists including Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughn” continue to woo the hearts of critics and fans alike. She doesn’t just sing the songs, she sometimes becomes the song.

Rani has collaborated with many great artists; Jeremy Monteiro, James Moody, Ernie Watts, Michael Veerapen, Iskandar Ismail, Shawn Kelly, Kerong Chok and T’ang Quartet.  Amongst her notable performances include her groundbreaking rendition of Majulah Singapura at the National Day Parade 2013.

Rani is founding member and director of the Musicians Guild of Singapore, and a member of COMPASS, Composers & Authors Society of Singapore Ltd. Rani is also involved in jazz education through “Jazz 123 - Rani Sings for Kids”, a unique jazz appreciation programme for young people.
