About the Speaker

Ms Denise Phua is a full-time volunteer serving as President of the Autism Resource Centre (Singapore).  She also serves as School Supervisor in the School Boards of two special schools -- Pathlight School and Eden School.  She was elected as a Member of Parliament in the Moulmein-Kallang GRC (ex-Jalan Besar GRC) since 2006 and serves the Kampong Glam ward. Her key interests are in championing the needs and aspirations of people who are at risk of being left behind in Singapore, especially the needy and the disabled in the areas of education, employment and social services.

Prior to giving up her corporate job on 1 January 2005, Ms Phua had more than 25 years of local and overseas corporate management experience.. She started her career in human resource in Hewlett-Packard Singapore where she gained valuable experience spanning 20 years in human resource management, product marketing and marketing communications in both local and overseas capacities, including several years in Beijing, China and Palo Alto, the United States.

Ms Phua later became Regional Managing Director/Consultant and a Founding Partner of Centre for Effective Leadership (Asia) Pte Ltd which provides leadership services and consulting in Asia. She was voted winner of the 2005/6 “Great Women of Our Times, Education and Public Service Category” awarded by Singapore Women’s Weekly.

Denise holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree, a Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management and a Master of Business Administration Degree. She is happily married and has 2 children, one of whom has special needs.
