About the Speaker

A pioneering Singaporean theatre director, actor, playwright and designer, Ivan Heng’s works have played festivals and theatres in more than 20 cities around the world.

Ivan has a law degree from the National University of Singapore.  His theatre training spans both Asian and Western traditions: directing with Kuo Pao Kun; Ballet and Contemporary Dance as a Dance Arts Singapore scholar; Peking Opera with Hong Kong Tang’s Opera Troupe and Leling Peking Opera and Chinese Theatre Circle in Singapore. 

In 2000, Ivan founded W!LD RICE, which is today recognized as one of Singapore’s flagship arts institutions, reaching out annually to an audience of 100,000 both through its main stage productions and education projects.

His projects for the company include directing the 20th Anniversary revival of Beauty World, Happy Endings – Asian Boys Vol. 3, The Campaign to confer the Public Service Star on JBJ, Second Link, Oi! Sleeping Beauty!!, Animal Farm, Ang Tau Mui, The Woman in A Tree on the Hill, An Occasional Orchid; set designing The Importance of Being Earnest, Animal Farm, An Occasional Orchid, and acting in The Importance of Being Earnest, The Visit of the Tai Tai, For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again, Emily of Emerald Hill and Animal Farm. 

As Creative Director of Singapore's National Day Parade 2009, Ivan’s theatrical vision radically reimagined and contemporised the event, and it reached out to a record-breaking live-television audience.

More recently, Ivan was the Creative Director of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, Singapore 2010. For its creativity, ambition and technical perfection, it was ranked among the top three opening ceremonies by Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee.
